Animals & Fireworks
tips to help the animals feel safe
"The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men." ― Alice Walker
Hello folx,
Fireworks season is upon us. It’s been here for a week in my neighborhood, much to the animals’ dismay (and mine!).
With the brilliant lights and deafening booms, coupled with the unpredictability of it all, they terrify animals.
Those of you who have lived with animals for awhile are familiar with their reactions. Be aware the reactions may change as they age. If you’re living with a new animal family member, it’s worth the extra time to help them feel safe and secure.
And I have some tips and ideas to help you do that.
I have collated stories I’ve heard from the animals themselves, tips on helping animals feel safe - including farm animals and animals in the wild, statistics for animals lost over the 4th and more into a workshop I presented in the past. Links are outdated, stats are not current, and the info itself is solid.
Until July 5, the full PDF is available for free on my Patreon page to download. Check it out, there’s some info I bet you will find helpful for your animal family!
Want to explore my page while you’re there? A good starting place is with my latest post “Writing As A Neurodivergent”. To get a full scope of what’s there, check out the Collections.
My page is currently in the midst of a soft opening to ensure all technical ducks are in a row. 🦆🦆🦆 If you run into any glitches while you’re there, please let me know. 🙏🙏 Much gratitude for that. And the grand opening is July 5, 2026!
Here’s to a safe and relaxed 4th to you and the animals!
Janet

Acknowledgement
I respectfully acknowledge the teachings and wisdom behind true kinship with animals is from Indigenous people whose lives, teachings and lifestyles were annihilated by the colonizers only to later be appropriated into colonized culture.
I am not amplifying those Indigenous voices and teachings but using colonized language to express what was appropriated from them and my colonized understanding of that.
I acknowledge the descendants of the original peoples, witnessing their history and stories. I respect their connection to the animals and to the earth.
