It All Started With Casper

I started riding horses because one of my young violin students was always 15-20 minutes late to her 30 minute lesson. She had just come from the barn and frankly, much preferred riding to violin. As she got her violin out and tuned up she would tell me about her riding lesson. By the time she was ready for the lesson, there were only a few minutes left.

That year, my holiday gift from her was a set of riding lessons. I took my first lesson and I was hooked.

Got my first horse (Casper, a white Tennessee Walker, pictured above) and in my first lesson I was appalled and perturbed at the way I was expected to treat Casper……smack him if he didn’t stand still when I was saddling him up, kick him HARD when riding and so on.

But I went ahead with it because I was a beginner, knew nothing about horses and thought that was the only way to make them pay attention. Because why would professionals treat a horse like that unless that was the only option?

Over the years I have realized those were not my people. Animals are sentient beings and they tell us the best way they can when something is off. We however, as people in general, don’t always hear them the best way we could.

If you’re in a place where your gut is telling you there’s a better way to relate with animals, I’m betting there is.

Many times the animals are having a hard time, not giving us a hard time.

Big difference.
