As I go through my days practicing true kinship with animals, I have become aware of how much goes on in my head.

It’s loud, it’s persistent and it’s not always true.

But because that inner voice is so often connected to my life purpose and passion, I tend to believe whatever it says.

Because of course I want to believe my inner voice wouldn’t steer me wrong. 🫤

My inner voice can be like a damaged cassette tape having breakdowns, meltdowns and malfunctions.

When that happens, it may be an indication I’m not paying attention to what’s going on or that my inner voice is denying what’s in front of me even when I’m witnessing it with my own eyes. Or maybe it’s an issue with timestamping, causing me to be stuck living in what was, or what I think things should be instead of what is.

True kinship with animals asks me to be attentive to what is now, and to accept that the now will be evolving.

In a colonized society, the expectation is that it’s necessary to work hard, be determined, successful and pull yourself up by your bootstraps.

But what if it’s not? What if it means not toiling, but being in stillness, in silence. What if it’s not being by yourself but being with companions on your true kinship journey?

Isn’t it refreshing to be acknowledged when someone says “I’ve been there, I hear you.” and encourages you to be in stillness?

When I hear that from another person (instead of my outdated inner voice saying “you should have known better”), there’s a sense of relief and a feeling of camaraderie and community.

As that happens, I learn to

  • be discerning about what my inner voice tells me

  • pay attention to what is and not what I think should be

  • be open to a network where I both receive and give support

It’s not an abracadabra magical fix, but it’s an ordinary breath of fresh air that takes me out of what I think should be into what is.

What’s your relationship with your inner voice?
