I know this topic needs much considered and nuanced conversation but we have to start somewhere, right?
True kinship with animals is all about being in relationship differently. And that starts by being in a different relationship with yourself.
It’s about redefining who you are so that you are able to recognize and accept their agency.
For instance, when you define yourself as the ‘owner’ of animal family members, you are literally defining yourself as one with an interest in and often dominion over property.
I’m guessing what you mean is something similar to being a caretaker for your beloved animal family. You don’t intend to indicate they are your property.
I understand why you’re using that word. In our current culture it’s the word that’s most accepted for the relationship we have with our animal family.
But words and phrases matter. Words we commonly use in reference to our animal kin — such as ‘owner’ — are inappropriate and belittling. When we continue to use those words, even though it is accepted practice and we mean no harm, we are unconsciously reinforcing their acceptability.
In episode #50 of the True Kinship With Animals Podcast guest Tracie Nichols said “it helps me to say ‘is that a belief I really want to continue to perpetuate; do I want to perpetuate that belief, do I want to continue following that?’ If so, cool, I’ll tuck it back inside, if not, thank you and good bye.”
Just for today — explore how you feel about the word ‘owner’. If you are able, sit with that for a bit and see what comes forth.
If you would like a place that offers deeper exploration and support so that you can discover yourself in your emerging journey towards true kinship, I invite you to explore Kindred.
