TKWA10

When I was a young child, my father was away from home working in Alaska. When he returned home, he told me the story about a kodiak bear getting into the camp and breaking into the stored food.

The men didn't want the bear in the camp, so they shot him.

Humans tend to claim dominion over animals instead of relationship with. Not surprisingly, that attitude benefits the humans much more than the animals.I mean, if you think about it, we're the ones encroaching on their territory.

Now as an adult, I look back on this story and so many questions pop into my head. Of course, it was necessary for the men to be safe, but was it necessary to kill the bear in the process? What were their other options?

Decades later, my BIG question is: what could the men have done to keep the bear safe?

So many questions and I will never know the answers to them.

In writing this, it is not my intent to shame the men who were following cultural standards or to have ‘unbearable’ empathy for the bear.

It is my intent to remind us:

We are in a both/and relationship with animals, not either/or

What does both/and relationship with animals mean to you? When you’re ready to explore that and find more clarity in your personal true kinship journey, I’m here for you, it will be a delight working together! 👍
